The Derailed By Darry Blog Drinking Game (Making It Better One Step At A Time)

In deciding that reading the Derailed By Darry anime blog borders on excruciating without some form of alcohol to make it actually funny, I’ve decided to devise a drinking game for anyone willing to take the plunge into that most unique of websites.  The best part of it is that Jason’s predictable style of writing lends itself perfectly to the common form of drinking games.   I received the inspiration for this idea after watching the excellent restaurant comedy Waiting again with it’s odd little game for passing the time at the grind that is working in a restaurant.  I hope that this game might catch on so that all of us might partake of the familiarity that is a Jason Miao article.  Without further ado here are the rules:

Anytime Jason uses one of the following phrases take one sip:

- Emo Facial Distortions

- Sunrise Trainwreck

- These are my readers

- Ms. Wang

- Sergay Wang

- Potemayo

- Darry’s Ass

Prose Rules:

- Anytime Jason uses a meme that is currently overused take one sip

- Anytime Jason suggests Kyoto Animation should remake something take one sip (Special Rule:  If it’s something that there is no conceivable way they could or would possibly ever be able to consider remaking then finish your drink)

- Anytime Jason makes an obscure reference to football take one sip (Special Rule:  If it is a particularly awkard segue then finish your drink)

- Anytime Jason makes an overtly sexual reference about a characters anatomy out of the blue, take two sips.

Just WTF Rules:

- Anytime Jason makes a barely tangible comparison between an event/character/plot point in an anime he’s watching with another one take a sip.  (Special Rule:  If he continues to do it for the duration of said series and the event/character/plot continues to differentiate from the one he mentioned, cumulatively increase the sip count each time he does it)

- If Jason repeats the same phrase or chant over and over again consecutively in one or more continous paragraphs then have an entire case.

- For every non sequitir Jason uses take one sip.

- Everytime Jason ends a paragraph with the same phrase in an article, take two sips.

Hypocrisy Rules:

- Everytime Jason suggests the writers of Sunrise and/or Gonzo are incompetent writers take three sips (Special Rule:  If in doing so he makes an improbably leap of logic then finish the drink)

- Everytime Jason just plain ignores something in order to crank out a meme or favourite talking point, take two sips (Special Rule: If he actually has to twist a fact or misrepresent something to get out the meme or talking point then finish your drink)

- If Jason starts giving advice on how to write well then down a case

Once In A Blue Moon Rules:

- If Jason’s articles start making profound sense then stop drinking and consult your nearest doctor, you have alcohol poisoning and need your stomach pumped.

- If Jason actually manages to verbally change his opinion on something given overwhelming evidence to the contrary of his previous opinion then down a kegger.

- If Jason ever suggests that Sunrise has done a good job with anything, run to your nearest liquor store and down everything in it.

21 points, 18 ways in which you are probably going to get totally freaking wasted if you actually try to play this game.  I take no responsibility for any personal injury this game causes people if they decide to go through with it.  If you do though I recommend you have a close friend near by to catch you when you hit the floor about halfway through your reading.

Suddenly, I’m glad to be teetotal.

  2. 2 RmX March 17, 2008 at 11:20 pm

When inspiration strikes, it is a good thing.

And a lot of things I’ve read today have had a lot to do with drinking for some strange reason. O.o

  3. 3 Setsu March 19, 2008 at 3:00 pm

You know, if I was able to drink alcohol without feeling sick, I’d be completely wasted by the first page.

Btw, you said football references? What about references to College Basketball?

  4. 4 Sheba March 19, 2008 at 5:56 pm

What’s your fucking problem with Jason? Last time I checked, he is entitled to his opinions, and certainly do not write for you, to please you. Did he looted you or something to justify ad hominem attacks from you?

  5. 5 Kaioshin Sama March 19, 2008 at 7:23 pm

Dude, there’s nothing ad hominem about this, all I know is that his writing style frequent reeks of factual innaccuracies, bias and hackery. He constantly attacks everything certain people do all the time for absolutely no reason other then they are who they are, and completely makes stuff up out of thin air to satisfy his desire for memes and to force his theories through regardless of whether they are based on complete and utter falsehoods. Frankly if he can get away with his nonsense then I can have a little fun poking fun at it. Besides it’s not like anything I’ve said here is not indicative of how he writes his articles day in and day out, nor is it overly nasty like his writing can be.

If he stops making it so easy and desirable to skewer his biased (I don’t even think that word goes far enough in describing his manner of thinking) and frankly insulting blog and ceases to infuriate the anime community with his constant my way or the highway attitude then I will have nothing left to say about him. It’s nothing more than his ceaseless arrogance and blind boorish attitude about anime in the face of frequent overwhelming proof against what he states as if it were fact that inspires me to write joke posts like this.

He wants to rip on Sunrise and Gonzo constantly without even bothering to fact check what he is saying? Fine, then I will in turn rip on him for being a hack writer. It seems perfectly fair to me. It’s the Golden Rule, Karmic Circle, “you get what you give”, however it is you want to see it. The difference is that I will continue to try and do it in the most positive manner possible like this drinking game joke about his predictable writing and it will be reactionary in nature, not proactive like his vendetta against those two aforementioned studios. All of my slams against Jason have been reactionary up until now and I have no vendetta against him whatsoever.

    >> It’s nothing more than his ceaseless arrogance and blind boorish attitude about anime

Hahahah, no you! You don’t seem to understand his intentions when he writes his blog posts! You are never going to bother to do it. And that’s why you act like you got butthurt when he says something bad about your precious shows.

Let me quote what he wrote earlier

I want to remind everyone that this is not English literature class. You get no points on Derailed for analyzing anime like To Kill A Mockingbird. The goal here has been and will always be finding anime that’s enjoyable. Whether it’s enjoyable to see people broken, to see people’s thigh meat, to see emo facial distortions, to see magical fables, to see spiral energy, that’s all acceptable. That is what Derailed and Derailed Nation is about. And if you feel any differently, save it for your English literature or philosophy class.

See? He never intended to be a serious business. People read his blog because they find his posts entertaining. If I want to read something more thought-provoking, I’ll go read OwenS’ blog for my need.

    >>> like his vendetta against those two aforementioned studios.

OH NOES!!! People doesn’t like Gonzo and Sunrise! Call the Anime Studio police and have them committed!

You are a fucking hypocrite and that’s why the bad blood between you and I will never go.

You fucking make me puke when you play the victim after you go your way slamming shows by Production I.G and KyoAni and act all surprised when people jump on you for that. Because you are doing exactly the same way when people badmouth Sunrise and Gonzo, you jump in your internet warrior armor! You say you have valid reasons for slamming I.G and KyoAni, and you expect us to accept them? Why don’t you do the same when people have qualms regarding your oh so precious studios?

And don’t get me started on how you are commenting on shows you have not watched! Not just the VN! But also the overlooked and underrated gems like Baccano.

And what about Crusader? Where are your critics against him when he slams your gundam shows? Oh right, he does have actual military experience and culture!!! *GASP*

What I found the most hilarious is that… You has to call Jason on what he wrote when he does what you should: just ignore the hell of each other!

  7. 7 Kaioshin Sama March 19, 2008 at 9:08 pm

I just don’t care for most of Production I.G’s and Kyoani’s shows, so what do I do? I don’t blog them if I don’t like them. I mentioned why I don’t like them, but I never said they were horrible and I’m sure there are a lot of people who disagree with that, which they are more than entitled to do. There’s also several things I like about Production I.G such as their arguable unique style and dedication to creating atmosphere….it’s just I don’t happen to be into their kind of methods. Nonetheless I’ll recognize their merits. Jason never recognizes the merits of anything he has chosen to hate and just acts like they are the worst thing ever conceived, which frankly makes him look like a loon sometimes when he really has to go out on a limb. I don’t like that kind of thing on principle, not just in his case.

I’ve also had talks with Crusader about his grievances with some shows, but get this, he actually gives reasons for why he doesn’t like certain shows, which I can understand. Same with DarkMirage. They don’t always go full on bashing either and even point out the positives once in a while. Jason just shoots out the things I mentioned above and doesn’t even give shows a chance before he starts with his trainwreck nonesense. So don’t go comparing me to him. I saw Ghost Hound, didn’t like it and turned my back on it. Same with the other shows I’ve criticized. With all of them I have come to the conclusion on my own and never failed to state the good and give valid reasons as to why I have come to a certain conclusion. There is a huge difference there I think.

And you know what, I wouldn’t even care that he fails to give valid reasons for his complaining if it weren’t for his egotistical demeanor and utter refusal to talk with others on the same level. He shows little respect for his readers, even going so far as to ridicule their comments followed by his tiresome “These are my readers” comment. He doesn’t care about anyone else but himself as far as I can tell. Thus the bad karma surrounding his entire blog is the thing that leads me to this most of all.

You’re right about one thing for sure though, I don’t understand his intentions and I never will. That’s not my problem though since he doesn’t exactly make them easy to comprehend through all the memes and shennigans. I want to understand, but it’s going to require him to work to that end as well, not just me. I’m sure if I did it would help alleviate the scorn I have for his methods.

Your views on how he views his readers are twisted. You are viewing what he wrote through the same filter as pro-Castro people are seeing the outside world. By pulling that “his way and the highway” formula, you are attempting to polarize the anime blog readership between him and the rest of the blogsphere, something that is so freaking ridiculous. But the thing, it was never that way, there were never “Jason and the others” just like you seem to imply. Instead, it is more between persistent blogs and short-lived ones, “summaries blogs” (random curiosity) and “in-depth blogs” (OwenS’ Cruel Angel Thesis), solo blogs and group blogs; and every blogs that falls between these parameters.
People read Jason’s blog because they like it. He writes that way because he enjoys it and do it with various levels of success.
And if he was that scornful toward his readers, they would have deserted his blog long ago, and let him slide down the pits of shit blogs like Cammyfan.com.

  9. 9 Kaioshin Sama March 20, 2008 at 1:02 am

They don’t desert him, he just bans them when they decide to question him. I’ve heard from more people that say he’s banned them from his blog than any other blog period. In fact I’ve never heard such stories of people having their I.P blocked from anywhere else. So add that to the list of reasons why I think he is a control freak and his blog has bad karma.

  10. 10 Anonymous May 12, 2008 at 9:27 pm

LOL. You know your hot shit in the anime blogging community when people make completely extravagant posts of hate for you.

  11. 11 Kaioshin Sama May 13, 2008 at 12:00 am

Don’t play this game with his Code Geass R2 Episode 06 take by the way. You won’t even make it past the intro before your liver gives out. Only Jason could get that V.V is Lelouch’s father from the brother line that the emperor used when referring to him, but hey, he got a crappy Star Wars joke out of it that’s been done to death by every cheesy cartoon in history. That ones a finish your drink by the way as dictacted by Hypocrisy rule number 2.

  12. 12 Richy May 13, 2008 at 11:15 am

Jason must be loving the extra fame he’s getting. Guess the saying that no publicity is bad publicity is probably true here.

  13. 13 AlsoSprachOdin February 8, 2009 at 11:48 am

I’m seriously suspecting that Sheba is a straw-man written only to make Jason’s regular readers look like idiots.

  14. 14 Kaioshin Sama March 16, 2009 at 10:00 pm

Wow….it’s hard to believe that the rules of this game still apply exactly one year later and could still potentially leave anybody who dares try it out with a non-functioning liver. :/

This however gives me an idea.

  15. 15 how to stop drinking January 17, 2014 at 9:40 pm

It’s the best time to make some plans for the
future and it is time to be happy. I’ve read this
post and if I could I wish to suggest you few interesting things or advice.
Maybe you could write next articles referring to this article.
I desire to read more things about it!
