So I’ve gotten the sense that the impression that Rie Kugimiya can only do one voice has been left on the English speaking anime community. I think this has more to do with the high profile nature of some of her recent voices like Shana, Louise and Nagi. It’s definitely not all she’s capable of and this can be proven in just 3 relatively short videos. Thank you Seiyuu Monatage samplers!
A Short Collection Of A Variety Of Roles She Has Done Ranging From The Oft Mentioned Tsundere Loli, To Tough As Nails Tomboy, To Young Boy, To Soft Spoken Adult
Even Her Singing Doesn’t Sound Samey. Take This Cyndi Lauper Knockoff (Tell Me That Does Not Sound Like Girls Just Want To Have Fun) Song And Compare It With….
This Alternative Punk Rock Sounding Piece. Big Difference I Think
So hopefully that will help somewhat in dispelling the myth that she’s a one trick pony, though since once a belief has been allowed to sit in the minds of internet denizens for to long it becomes very difficult to get rid of with even solid evidence. It’s up to the reader to take the obvious and realize the truth. So go on and start realizin’ then!
Wow, her singing voice is much nicer when not doing high-pitched songs =o Never heard that one before ^^
And I do think that Kugimiya is really great at voicing young boys, her Al was awesome and I absolutely *adore* her Taiki from 12 Kingdoms (seriously never heard such an adorable voice for a little kid before!), who says that she can only do tsundere roles has obviously watched only Shana/Hayate/Zero no Tsukaima D:
Thank you for this! I’ve always admired Rie Kugimiya for her wide range of voices (knowing her from FMA, to Gakuen Alice, to Bleach and so forth) and it always confused me to hear her being type-casted as such (especially considering it’s really hard, for me anyway, to see the similarities between Al, Hotaru and Karin). I can’t believe the difference between her singing voice, though! That was a special treat.
Thanks again!
I love her voice..
Especially her voice for Nagi and Shana..
Her other non-tsundere roles are good as well..
And I didn’t know that she has 3 roles in Bleach..
I didn’t even know that she has any role in Bleach..
Lol..
Nice~ I didn’t think she was actually the voice behind Nemu.
They missed out on Gundam 00 and Mnemosyne though. Nevertheless, the first video was great. Reminded me a little of the Grammy Awards preview clips showing the five nominees for Best [insert name] Award.
She’s everywhere nowadays too, and I do recall seeing her name as the MALE protagonist in Kanokon.
That was a great montage.
Rie Kugimiya is an awesome seiyuu who has only gotten stronger and better as the years come on.
Sure she is often uses her tsundere lolicon type of voice (although she doesnt always use that voice for tsundere roles), but she is able to vary that voice enough to do a range of female personalities by slightly modifying her angry cute lolicon voice.
She does hard-cuteness voice (like tilel (elemental gelade) or rizel (rizelmine)) that allows her to be a great chibi character, to dropping more cutesy out and becoming more tsundere for Nagi or Louise, to be even colder for Shana, to being freezing cold as an awesome ice-woman in Rosario Vampire (or i suppose hotaru before that) that just makes you scared of her.
Its a little dissapointing though that the roles she hasnt picked up more young male voices though. I thought she was really amazing in FMA, and would have liked her to be in more roles…(i havent really watched Digimon Savers so i cant comment on that). I guess though that the main roles she currently does though are all brilliant enough to keep her busy and not warrant any complaint though.
Rie Kugimiya represents all that is right with the world. We’re actually getting married someday (she doesn’t know this yet).
