Before anything, here is a special point we took recently: considering our satisfying and hard working manpower here and there (be it translators, encoders etc), we decided to change slightly the release scheldule:
Instead of letting everyone down until the full patch is done, we decided to change it altogether and mimic the Onikakushi-hen type of release: Chapter by chapter, or batch by batch of chapters each time.
This has been decided like this, as the process is much longer than expected and our wish to polish and serve a translation patch as neat as possible, hence much more retranslation and editing.
that said…
Witch Hunt is proud to announce that the first patch for Umineko no Naku Koro ni is available!
The first patch covers Chapter 00 to 02 of Episode 1, Legend of the Golden Witch. You can get it with these links (several mirrors):
[WH] Umineko 1 V0.1 15.3MB (rar file)
-Rapidshare
-MegaUpload
-Sendspace
-Mediafire
Please be sure to check the readme files as some specific points must be taken in account for the full use of the patch.
Also, remember this patch only works with Episode 2 (game). It does NOT work with episode 1.
Please remember that Episode 1 is INCLUDED in Episode 2 (just how it was for Higurashi), hence we are not skipping any episode at all. But the patch can only work with the second game, translation wise, it is about the first episode.
Please don’t hesitate to leave your feedbacks, comments, troubleshoots and so forth here!
We will soon provide a subbed version of the Opening movie of the game. Stay tuned!
EDIT: Much like what I said on AnimeSuki, I think this report might be useful here as well.
Much like what we warned from the start, the patch doesn’t work well with an episode 1 installation. Well, after few more tests, it seems you can actually play with an episode 1 install. However, absolutely no BGM is played at all. Furthermore, in chapter 2, during the “shacking boat” scene, due to instability with that portion with episode 1, the game sometimes freezes without much warning.
This happen almost all the time if you uses CTRL to skip through, while it is much rarer if you read normally.
That said, we strongly recommend against reading without BGM: Umineko is a sound novel: the lack of BGM will deal a very hard blow on your enjoyement of the story and such. Please get an Episode 2 copy as fast as you can.
On our side, we will try to provide an installer for episode 1. However, our main priority is to serve the fastest way an english patch for both Episode 1 and 2.
I can’t promise anything, but I will submit as soon as possible our progress and other updates.

thanks much.
don’t bother with the subbed opening, including a text file with the translated lyrics is enough.
OMG! You guys win so much. Fuck I love you.
This is amazing! I’ve been waiting since this has been announced, thank you all that’re involved and good luck with your continual efforts!
Been looking forward to playing this for some time
One problem though… a technical issue…
great so far, but it just randomly started putting the text back into Japanese. I am using episode 2, and I guess I pretty much just started the 1st one, but just as they finally arrive to the island, it cut back to Japanese.
So any ideas would be great…
holy shit, too good to be true
@ Tomitake Flash: as stated in the blog entry, only chapter 00 to chapter 02 of Episode 1 has been translated.
please remember that “episode” refers to “route” if you prefer, while chapters refers to a portion of an episode.
For your instance, there is 15 chapters for episode 1.
That is to say: we wanted people to enjoy the game already, instead of make you waiting 3-4 more months or something.
@klashikari
ok, thanks. I guess I just misunderstood what was said…
can anyone help me? whenever i try to start the episode, the episode will stay frozen as a black screen. i did everything the readme says, so i guess im lost xD
nvm, fixed it o.O;;
I have that same problem. How did you fix it, Cuervo? Mine says “07th expansion, Witch Hunt” and then it fades to black and remains black.
dammit, i forgot. i only got to play it once (which was on probably around april 18…i for get) , and then i had to wipe out my computer because of some stupid virus i found in one of my songs. but if u want, ill try to find out again >:3
I the same problem as sachiryo. =’( did u ever figure it out? how bout you cuervo?
My apologizes for the late answer, I didn’t notice the first question a while back.
The way you describe the problem seems like this: you either extracted the patch in the game folder, or the directory is messed up.
As explained in the readme, the patch files must stay in their folder, so they are a sub directory of the game folder.
For example, if you have something like this:
C:\Program Filers7thExpansion\Umineko
as a game folder, the patch must be
C:\Program Filers7thExpansion\Umineko\[WH]Umineko 1 C0-2 English (or whatever the patch folder name is).
as you can see, the patch folder is in the Umineko folder, as a direct sub directory. The content of the patch must NOT be extracted in the main folder, otherwise, the patch “arc.nsa” file will overwrite the original arc.nsa file of the game. Both are required.
First of all, thankyou for replying! ^^
I did what the readme said and what you said to do. I extracted the patch and didn’t move anything, everything is in their subfolder. I opened the onscripter-en to see if i could start playing, and after it says “07th Expansion, Witch Hunt” it goes black and closes by itself. o.o
perhaps the game isn’t working properly? Does it do the same thing to you if you launch the game through the normal exe?
I wouldn’t be surprised if the installation wasn’t properly done.
The other possible point might be that the patch isn’t a direct sub directory: please check if you reach the patch files directly once you open the patch folder in the game folder.
I used the Episode 1 version that you can now download from 07th Expansion’s site, and BGM was working fine for me. However, the last scene I could play was the boat scene. Is this where translation ends or is it just because I have Episode 1?
Indeed, this is actually where the translation stops.
We are resuming the retranslation and the next chapter is nearly done (albeit I won’t give any approximative release date, avoiding needless hope or so).
You can however check the status of it on the wiki page.
hey guys do anybody know where can i find the original game it can by whatever shop or torrents prefer first one
THX
I downloaded it and extraced it like the readme says with the folders and such, but it still opens and fades to black. It either stays like that, or closes. Once, it even opened as a .mp3 in Audacity and played a strange, loud squeaking sound for no apparent reason.
Help?
*extracted.
Did you check the structure of your game directory?
If so, please have a look at this image guide. That might help you to see how it goes.
