Mugen no Frontier: Super Robot Taisen OG Saga

Has anybody ever wondered what a Super Robot Wars RPG would look like.  Well wonder no further because the time is finally here…

Based off of the popular Super Robot Taisen Original Generation Series, Mugen No Frontier is part of the ever-expanding lineup of Banpresto’s core franchise.  For this outing Banpresto teamed up with Monolith Soft to create a sort of hybrid of Namco x Capcom and Super Robot Wars (In case people never guessed they were like distant cousins before, we know now that they have been reunited, but with a pure RPG style of gameplay.  Here’s all the details that I personally know of so far, or rather, the official info:

Mugen no Frontier’s protagonist is a 23-year old bounty hunter by the name of Harken Browning (Voiced by Nobuyuki Hiyama).  He commands a space ship called Zeit Krokodil (German for Time Crocodile) and is described as cool and nihilistic. The game’s heroine is Kaguya Nanbu (Voiced by Yukana), an 18-year old princess. As per her family’s customs, she has to do a pilgrimage. On this pilgrimage, she meets Harken. Watching over Kaguya is Suzuka Hime (Voiced by Mamiko Noto). Ashen Breydel (Voiced By Kaori Shimizu) is an android traveling with Harken. Ashen is Harken’s subordinate. A machine gun is installed inside her leg and she possesses a powerful rocket punch.

Well do the names look familiar?  We’ve got a Browning and a Nanbu of reversed sexes and an Ashen (Lamia Loveless’ codename is Ash to Ash).  I honestly have no idea about Suzuka Hime, if someone knows what the reference might be then let me know.  There’s also a bit of info on the combat system:

Player will move from one town to another on a standard overworld map (Something I haven’t seen in ages). Once inside a town, they can choose a location they want to visit from a menu (I guess it’s kind of like an ADV). Mugen no Frontier will feature random encounter battles. These battles promise to be very action-oriented. Players can execute lengthy combo attacks by subsequently pressing various buttons (Sounds like Valkyrie Profile). Last but not least, robots are also set to appear in battle. One screenshot shows a big robot helping the party out with a support attack.

That’s about the extent of the information that is known at this time although there is of course the requisite set of Famitsu Scans and a Video Interview that I will of course post the links for.

Famitsu Scans

Page 1: Information on Kaguya Nanbu and Ashen Breydel

Page 2: Information on Harken Browning and Suzuka Hime (Suzuku-Hime is my favourite so far by the way)

Page 3: Information on Several Robots (One looks like a Geshpenst the other Alt Eisen)

Page 4: Information on Two More Robots (One looks like Alt Eisen Crossed with Weiss Ritter, the other kind of like Aussenseitter)

Interview With The Creator (In Japanese)

There are a lot of references to the ATX team that make this game look like almost like an Alternate Universe for Super Robot Wars, and I’m sure even more references will be revealed as the games development continues.  The game is set for release in 2008, so unless Banpresto pulls another one of it’s delays we should be seeing more info soon.  Until then here are some fanart pictures I’ve found for the game that have already cropped up.

Little Much Bust There?

At This Point Why Even Bother Wearing Any Clothing At All?

They did, Super Robot Taisen Original Generation Gaiden. It also features a card battle game I plan to try once I feel like it. Hope I can score a Latooni card.
