And The Annies Go Too….

So the Oscar’s aired last….Sunday was it?  I wasn’t really paying attention as the Oscar’s tend to come and go these days with little of the glitz and glamour they had become infamous for (and you know what, thank god for that).  Meanwhile, another less well known awards ceremony (actually just the announcement, the actual ceremony takes place in March) was going on this week.  It of course was the 7th annual Tokyo International Anime Fair.  And here are the results:

Best Director Went To:

Hideaki Anno for
Evangelion: 1.0 You Are [Not] Alone

Best Original Story Went To:

Taiyo Matsumoto for

Best Screenplay Went To:

Keiichi Hara for
Summer Days with Coo

Best Character Design Went To:

Atsushi Nishigori for
Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann

Best Art Direction Went To:

Shinji Kimura for

Best Music Went To:
Yoko Kanno for
Aquarion (Movie)

Best Voice Actor Went To:
Mamoru Miyano for
Mobile Suit Gundam 00 (Setsuna F. Seiei), Death Note (Light Yagami)

I’m going to pause there and say I’m not particularly impressed with Anno and Kanno winning for what are essentially movie remakes of older Television Series.  Somehow it seem unfair and kind of like they just gave them the awards because they are popular and famous.  Considering the criteria for the award is supposed to be that the winner made the greatest contribution to the world of anime, I don’t see how the god knows what number we’re on remake of Evangelion and the cliff notes of a mediocore mecha series (unless it’s a completely new soundtrack) can qualify.  Anyway, on to the big winners.

Best Overseas Animated Movie Went To:

Had people going there for a sec, but there’s always more.

Best OVA Went To:

Nasu: A Migratory Bird with Suitcase

I’m just going to pretend I know what that is.

Best Feature Length Film Went To:

Summer Days with Coo

Obviously this never got subbed so I don’t know about it.

And now it’s the moment everyone has arguably been waiting for.  What two series are going to win the coveted Best In Animated Television Series.  There were a lot of good anime series this year, but the rules of the Tokyo Anime Fair state that only two series can share the pantheon.  Last year it was Suzumiya Haruhi No Yuutsu and Code Geass….and this year it’s….

Best Animated Television Series Goes To:

Clannad and Lucky Star Dennou Coil And Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh so close eh.  No seriously who would I have been kidding this year.  Yep the Tokyo Anime Fair certainly is different then the pretentious Oscar’s which would never allow an action/mecha series like Gurren Lagann to take home the award.  Ditto for Dennou Coil and it’s sci-fi inspired storyline.  On that tack, being my favourite genre period, I’m glad too see that Science Fiction did so well this year in Japan.  I guess for all the yapping I’ve done about Slice of Life being the clincher genre it really didn’t matter outside of maybe popularity on 2ch.  Heck even Gundam managed to worm it’s way to the awards in one capacity.

With this I feel vindicated, 100% alive and in control, like 21st century anime has finally managed to give me a nod rather than a swift kick in the balls (With 2004-early 2006 being a Kagami Kuro nutcracker).  In any event 2007 was definitely a year for me to enjoy when it came to anime, that’s for sure, and there were no regrets this time either.  I hope other people enjoyed it just as much.  Until next time, good night and god bless.
