Lucky Star OVA Update

Yes Kyoani is doing it, yes the original cast is back, yes to everything.  So now that what’s important to people is out of the way we can just sit back and wait then yes?  Oh right the plot…..nobody cares about the plot, we’re talking Kagami Hiiragi (Personally I prefer Kagami Kuro, but that comes later) and possible tsundere moments.  At least the OVA will give Kaori Fukuhara and Minoru Shiraishi something to do besides being a bridge bunny in Macross Frontier (speaking of which I’ve gotta get on that) and ummmmmmm something.  Yeah remember that guy that liked to gyrate around at the end of every episode.  Nobody loved him. 😦

Update:  Yeah so apparently the plot is going to revolve around (as in central theme) a battle of wits between Konata and the Anime Tenchou, and it doesn’t sound like the other characters are really going to factor in too much.  The Anime Tenchou being a feature character gives Kadokawa the chance to really go at hawking their wares with their most popular property and through said property possibly enhance the sales of their other works and maybe (Pfft!) pull themselves out of the red ink for the next quarter.

I don’t mean to sound like too much of a downer, but this sure sounds like a cash in.  Also people looking for more Kagami, Tsukasa and Miyuki, I’m not sure you should get your hopes up to much as the ad very much has Konata and Anime Tenchou in the foreground and everybody else in the background.  Then again I can’t say I expected anything but cheap commericialism from Kadokawa anymore.  They don’t even care about what they are doing to their properties and characters, only about how it can make them money and it’s going to continue backfiring in the long run, I can feel it.

Just let this series die. It is obviously just as cash-in like you said and for people who still can’t get over their loli-fetishes. <__<

I hate it when I’m right. This focus on the Tenchou and Konata, without the rest of the cast having much of a role… well, it sounds like they’ve forgotten what made Lucky Star work – not Aya Hirano, but the way the cast interacted, and the humor was organic to the situations… when it worked.

Plus, the Kagamin-lovers, which there are a lot of, will hate it.

Considering they eventually pushed my favourite of the characters to the back of the pile in Miyuki and started making the TV series more and more Konata centric as time went on (screen time and endings seemed to also be decided by seiyuu and character popularity in the first cour) I can’t say I’m surprised.

I meant let’s even look at the ending singers:

#01: “Space Ironmen Brothers” by Aya Hirano
    #02: “It’s a Victory! Akumaizer 3” by Aya Hirano
#03: “Sore ga, Ai deshou” by Aya Hirano
#04: “Sailor Suit and Machine Gun” by Emiri Katō
    #05: “Cha-la Head-Cha-la” by Aya Hirano
#06: “Valentine Day Kiss” by Aya Hirano & Kaori Fukuhara
#07: “Chijō no Hoshi” by Aya Endo
#08: “Monkey Magic” by Aya Hirano
#09: “Kogarashi Ni Dakarete” by Aya Hirano
#10: “I’m Proud” by Emiri Katou
#11: “Doraemon no Uta” by Aya Endo & Kaori Fukuhara

Yeah so that’s Aya Hirano with no less than 7 songs, Emiri Katou with 2, Aya Endo with 2 and Kaori Fukuhara with only duets. Aya Hirano was always their darling from the get go (She was their Haruhi after all) while the others fell by the wayside, it’s just now they don’t even seem to care at all.

The Otaku will love it regardless though and it will make Kadokawa a ton of money no matter what they do, so why not get in a few product placements while they are at it since that’s what seems to really matter to them. Heck they might even be able to give Aya Hirano a seiyuu award for it if they can’t for Haruhi.

Kadokawa gets more amusing as the days go by though. http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2008-05-08/lucky-star-cast-cosplays-as-haruhi-dancers-on-bonus-card

They are really really getting more pushy and desperate then ever before. It’s really sad and sweat drop inducing. I can’t even tell the difference between Haruhi and Lucky Star anymore and I think neither can Kadokawa. Though as long as Lucky Star can be made into Haruhi they won’t need to worry too much about until it eventually comes out. Lucky Star made them more money than Haruhi by bypassing any notion of entertainment in the end and just going for whatever the Otaku wanted to see AND it’s probably cheaper to produce because Kyoani doesn’t have to worry to much about doing their usual sparkle sparkle. Let the Otaku cash flow while I mourn what was once a decent property.

See the other post about ‘it’ll make money, but not as much as they were hoping for, and in doing so will run the Lucky Star AND Haruhi franchises into the ground’ prediction.

I still hate it when I’m right, or when it looks like I’m right. One worked due to quirky humor, not just because Konata was DFC otaku.

    Eh…Konata vs. Anime Tenchou…

Anime Tenchou is a cool guy and all, but a whole episode of this? Geez, they’re running low of inspiration.

By I guess anything that Kyoto Animation makes would probably be eaten up by their fanbase no matter the quality. Sad truth.

@Don: I agree. Anime Tenchou’s short appearances in Lucky Star were kinda funny, but that’s the thing. His appearances were short out-of-nowhere sequences that just threw everything off, and that’s what made it funny. But an entire episode starring him? It would make sense if it was another Anime Tenchou OVA, but not a Lucky Star OVA.

And as much as I love Konata, it’s not Lucky Star if all the other characters, especially Kagami, Tsukasa, and Miyuki, are pushed aside. I’m still gonna watch it and hopefully it doesn’t turn out to be so bad, but so far, it looks I won’t be enjoying the OVA too much.

Isn’t more lucky star a good thing no matter what the content is?

  8. 8 Kaioshin Sama May 11, 2008 at 9:15 am

No. That’s like saying a loaf of bread is good no matter how stale or moldy it’s gotten. It may be bread and you might normally like it, but it could make you regret eating it later if it’s no longer fresh and nutrious and instead full of infectious bacteria on the inside. Though we’ll just have to see if this Lucky Star has some shine left in it or if it burnt out long ago when the OVA finally comes around.

Really though, nothing in life is good no matter what the content is. That’s just not good practice to think something like that and it’s a good way to get stiffed, scammed and/or short-changed.

    @gundampilotspaz:
That was my mentality before watching the Disgaea anime. Wanna know how disappointed I was with it?
