Suzumiya Haruhi: We Can Rebuild Her, Faster, Stronger, More Bossy Then Ever!

I love it when I mention something in passing only to be proven almost 100% correct.  (He lies) So the new news about the second Suzumiya Haruhi Season 2 (no that’s not a typo) came and went, leaving many in a state of confusion as to just what exactly is going on.  You see, for those who don’t already know, apparently Kadokawa/Kyoani have decided to scrap their first draft for the second season (the one I mentioned way back in July 2007) and to go with an “All new Haruhi” as the Newtype article released apparently puts it.

This reminds me of something……something getting a new makeover that is already partway completed with a new engine…..HOLY MOTHER, It’s DUCHESS HARUHI FOREVER!!  :/  Well not quite, but really I mean for a franchise who’s main aim has always been light hearted fun and making people feel moe for the characters, Kadokawa seems to be working this like it’s going to be the rapture or something and Kyoani is just kind of sitting back and taking what I feel is the big brother once again interfering in the process of them producing an anime.  It kind of reminds me of how Lucky Star was rewritten halfway through, and people know how I feel about that.  Could Haruhi be in store for the same crass commercialism and characters advocating Kadokawa products that I feel greatly diminished the enjoyability of that franchise around the middle portion?  Are we in store for Lucky Star references being made in the midst of the events of the Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya?  I’d like to say probably not, but from experience I’d also say any advertising is possible with Kadokawa involved until the curtain drops.

So really where we stand after almost a year since the first announcement is in the exact same place, with pictures proving (somewhat) that the second season exists and is underway, but with nothing tangible to go on as to what it might be like.  Time really is a wastin’ Kadokawa and I can see more then a few people who are taking a somewhat lukewarm response to this latest announcement who seem like pretty big fans of the franchise.  If Kadokawa is indeed trying to interfere in the product somehow then it really is a shame and I wish Kyoani had a little more strength to resist.  Unfortunately they are stuck with one of the most comically money grubbing companies ever to grace the anime scene to provide the source material necessary for their very survival.

I guess we’ll just have to see how it all turns out…..whenever exactly that is.

Also apparently those Anime Blog Awards were announced and as I suspected there were no new blogs among the winners and thus no real promotion for any rookies was done in the end as was apparently supposed to be the goal here.  That’s what you usually get when you put things in the hands of the masses though, a popularity contest, and something in me doubts it will even be all that different when the Bloggers Choice Awards hit.  :/ Also Derailed By Darry was credited as the funniest blog, which proves that you too can be funny by just repeating the same few one liners over and over and over ad infinitum until everyone caves.  Get out there and make it happen!  G’Day then.

Two responses to the above questions:

    1) Yes, KyoAni will bow before their pimping-their-characters-out-for-a-hooker-shop-like-Lucky-Star masters.

    2) The God-Empress reigns supreme… and long hair is a multiplier for sex appeal. Which they’ve employed here… suggesting point #1 again.

The fact that we’ve progressed to an age where people realize that Kyoani is made up of mere mortals seems to indicate that a lot of people are on the same page as me now. It wasn’t to long ago that people felt that just by them being involved a series was automatically a guaranteed “masterpiece”. I say nay nay, but rather that these mortal men have always known how to attract and please the coveted and very spend happy otaku crowd, and that has been their strength.

This also raises an entirely different scenario for me to consider for the first time ever though, perhaps Haruhi’s popularity exceeds that of the rather exaggerated reputation of the studio such that people have been hit with the possible realization that the surprise hit factor of the series was what made it and Kyoani’s bones and that it’s arguably an unattainable feat to duplicate it. Me personally I don’t understand the ultra high standards people have for this franchises second installment having read the novel it’s based on, but meh…..

It’s guaranteed to be a really interesting ride nonetheless. One of the most intriguing parts of watching any Kyoani series for me has always been observing the extreme and sometimes bizarre (in my opinion) reactions some fans have to them and chuckling about it and Haruhi I think is unrivaled in that category. Either way if the blogosphere and internet as a whole is even still standing after the curtain draws on it I’m going to be giving myself a veteran’s medal for surviving the 2nd Haruhi Season. 😛

Haesslich: Praise be Her Name, indeed, battle-brother.

Kaioshin: I have my own worries about the franchise, and while I’m sure that KyoAni will do a good enough job with the adaptation, I AM worried about how much Kadokawa’s influence is going to figure into the production. Genre references is all good and well (it happens in the books a lot, after all), but product pandering has its limits…

Oh, and am I the only one who found the ‘Cancelling 2nd Season and rewriting Haruhi’ announcement hilarious? Given the fact that Suzumiya Haruhi is a franchise, anything made after the first season is going to be considered by viewers as a second season ANYWAY. Semantics, sheesh.

    Thanks for the information.

When I first saw Lucky Star and Haruhi I was certainly of the opinion that Kyoani could do no wrong, but after watching the fuko arc of clannad I wasn’t so sure. Maybe the source material wasn’t fantastic, but then again they certainly didn’t help it.

Personally I’m a little worried for Season 2 and feel like I might understand a little of what’s going on(although it’s far more likely that my intuition is totally wrong). The fun loving, light, highschool romance is really only developed in the first light novel and a few of the side stories. Unfortunately there isn’t much development and the series takes a turn towards a crazy war between different factions. Basically the tone will be completely different than the first season. I don’t think this is a horrible development I just think that the producers are going to try tirelessly to recreate the magic that made them loads of money in the first season and in the end totally fail because the source material doesn’t exist for that. In the end they’re in a lose lose position between selling out with fanservice/Mikuru moeness and sticking with the story. I personally hope they stick with the story. The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya could be a lot of fun. Who really knows though. Maybe it is just about commercialism. I just wish they would at least try to keep the hype up instead of letting all of the loyal fans cool their heads. I just hope there will be a group willing to fansub it because I’m pretty sure it will be licensed before the first episode even hits the internet.
