See? My way of naming titles do make sense

One thing that I think this series is doing correctly at the moment is the fact that the pacing is fairly stable and well balanced with the revealing of character’s personalities and past. The pacing is relaxed and you never feel that it goes either too slow or too fast. This week, it is Hime’s turn to share the spotlight though I don’t think we have seen the best of her yet.

Thoughts: The story this time revolves around Hime’s pet that she happened to come across by chance who she named Silver. At first I thought that this was a rather strange name to give to a small pooch like Silver but it suddenly clicked after she said one thing. So the reason why Hime is so free in allowing Silver to eat anything and everything he sees was because she was trying to fatten him up so she could ride him like some ranger steed! That is quite some plan there, Hime.

Well going further into the episode revealed that Silver is more than just a normal dog. He is actually quite a savage and will protect his master at all costs. This was proven when he took a chunk out of Akina’s arm when he was sleeping to show his dedication to his master. I don’t know why but that scene scared me…animals really are quite intelligent huh.

But following on from that Hime displayed quite an over the top behaviour in talking to Silver and even slapping him like you would do to a person. Though thinking back, the reason why she did this might not be as farfetched as you would initially think. Just like Akina, who is guilty of carrying what is effectively the tag of being a youkai murderer, Hime is also carrying a lot of responsibilities and pressures on her shoulder.

This is where the good character development which I mentioned earlier comes in. The flashback shows how much responsiblity was given to Hime at a young age since her grandmother died. Though this it is reasonable to understand her usual uptight and serious personality. But the good thing is that she isn’t all just that and do know how to have fun sometimes as shown eariler in the episode where she screwed up in the training. This does give her somewhat of a more colourful character but in the end, such limited development in this episode isn’t enough for me to like her though I can see where she is coming from.

So the act of slapping Silver was less of what he did but more about her venting her own frustration onto Silver. I suppose after hearing about how the townspeople are reacting to her lack of professionalism ever since she has started to take care of Silver she became annoyed with herself because of tarnishing her own though not intentionally. She was looked down upon being the mayor since she was small so being looked down upon again by the elders would have certainly caused her to feel shame.

So with that, she took it out on Silver while caused him to leave and come across Ao’s brother (as I say again, this is just the nickname I have for him as I don’t know his real name).

The fight scene was quite hilarious though, I mean…a flying dog…how cheesy can you get? Though overlooking that face it was rather touching to see Hime beating the living crap out of Silver after he was fully turned into a monster (and thankgod they did not find a lame way to bring the dead back alive again). Poor Silver, he was pretty much a punching back for Hime to vent out her own frustration but at the end, it couldn’t have been helped. The others were just to stunned to react and just froze at the scene.

Akina continues to win points for me as he takes control of the situation to send Silver to doggy heaven.

Meanwhile, looking at the larger picture, it seems like Ao’s brother is slowly but surely chipping away at the sacred trees. All that we know so far is that these trees connect the human and youkai worlds together but asides of that it is still quite mysterious what other properties they have. But since Ao’s brother was able to break the bark of one of them and witness the fast growth of a branch I think I have a hunch on what he is trying to do. Perhaps he is trying to sprout his own sacred trees to amass his own army of youkais from the other side? Seems like a classic thing a villain would do right?

My thoughts about Mr. Fox’s motives are these. As I understand things, the sakura trees are the connection between the human dimension and the youkai dimension like you said. I believe that the fact that they are sealed and no longer bloom is acting as a barrier between the worlds so that no youkai may enter from the youkai world or exit the human world (except by Tuning). I think Mr. Fox is trying to break the seal that prevents their blooming. When the seal is fully broken, I expect an invasion from the youkai world is likely to occur which probably would not be a Good Thing for the residents of the youkai world, human and youkai alike. I don’t think Mr. Fox is trying to grow his own trees so much as cause the existing trees to bloom.

@sterling01 ~ That certainly helps a lot…and I’ve just realised that he shares the same surname with Akina (freak coincidence, or something more?).

@LKK ~ That’s another possible scenario which still leads to the same goal, more youkais invading the place ^^’
But to destroy the barrier, it doesn’t seem like he can do all of the trees in one go saying that he will take it one step at a time (slowly). And the downside to that is that the shota guy may be able to restore the barrier before all of them are broken assuming that it takes all of the trees to be able to open the portal for youkais to come falling through.

Considering the speed of growth, it could be possible for him to grow his own tree in some hidden place. And if like you say, no youkais are able to enter the world except for tuning then what about the case of the psycho in the first episode, he was possessed by a youkai all of a sudden which is odd seen as there is no reason for “it” to want to go on a rampage if “it” has been around for a long time. The guy who was possessed used to be a human right?

I’m not sure if the possessed guy from ep 1 used to be a human or not. I thought he was a youkai since he jumped the 10 meter wall in one bound. Akina thought he was youkai at any rate.

If you remember ep 1, the old guy talking to Hime said that this was the 4th incident in 6 months. He also said that it’s likely that the bad guys have collected enough power to break through the barrier soon. Hime agreed, saying that they have to assume that’s what’s happened. I figure that’s how the youkai possessors are getting in. It probably got in and then possessed the prisoner as quickly as it could.

Also, as far as I know, Tuning only returns youkai to their dimension. I didn’t mean to imply that I thought Tuning lets them in as well. I don’t think there’s anyway to let new youkai in when the barrier’s completely intact. The youkai possessors getting in because the barrier is weakening or cracking. At least, that’s how I understand things at the moment.

On a different note I felt bad for the dog. I mean yeah biting someone can lead to serious consequences like getting put down. But didn’t think they would actually do it. Dog sure held a grudge from that bit of scolding Akina did. But then tried to at least do the right thing and stop the fox guy. Sadly it didn’t go well at all and all Akina could do was send it off. Is kind of sad there is sometimes nothing that can be done in a situation.

In the end the moral is old people cause trouble. Stupid old guy.
