About What Happened Last Night (The Gundam 00 Episode 24 Drinking Game Results Are In)

The Moment I Have Been Waiting For All Season Has Come At Last.  To Saji x Louise Reborn! *downs a shot*

I just fudged it and guessed so I drank the equivalent of 8 shots of whiskey last night.  Did I overdrink or underdrink?  Do you actually care?  If so find out now:

Setsunator Innovade Setsuna Fragdown Rules:

– If Setsuna is shown having the golden Innovator eyes take a sip (Natch, he’s the freaking “Innovade” after all.  A sip for me is about a quarter of a shot glass so we’re up to 1/4 of 8)

Take a sip every time Setsuna says “Gundam”.  (Once, but holy fuck was that freaking loud and frankly pretty gar for Setsuna.  2/4 of 8)

– If the Gaga squad (and yes for those who don’t already know I also find the idea behind them incredibly lame) is just entirely absent next episode then down a fresh glass (Well they were there and one of them even played a key part in disabling the Regnant so nope. 2/4 out of  8)

– If Setsuna wipes out the entire remainder of the Gaga squad in less than a minute then down a keg (Nope, Tieria disabled them all.  That’s going to be a lot of Brings and Divine’s to get rid of though.  Wonder what they are going to do with them all….. 2/4 of 8)

Lockon And Ali Showdown Rules:

– If Lockon Kills Ali take a sip (Did he ever, it took him a ridiculously long time to do so though 3/4 of 8)

– If Ali kills Lockon finish your drink (Nope 3/4 of 8)

– If Setsuna intervenes and kills Ali then finish your drink or down a fresh one if Ali killed Lockon (You might almost get away with saying this happened when Setsuna activated Trans-Am burst, but it’s still a no since he didn’t kill Ali 3/4 of 8)

– If the duel is still unresolved by the end of the episode then down a keg and wonder how they can possibly fight for that long (For a while there I thought I was going to be screwed and have to finish my entire bottle but Lockon finished him off so no. 3/4 of 8)

Allelujah Rules:

– Anytime Allelujah says “Marie” at least twice in a row then take a sip.  Keep drinking for each time he says it (I knew it, I knew Alle would force me to drink a lot.  Character has the most static dialogue in the series I swear to god.  I counted only twice though.  1 and 1/4 of 8)

– If Allelujah actually follows “Marie” up with anything else take two sips for every other word he says (He actually followed up one “Marie” with the word “no”.   Hooray two sips…. :/ 1 and 3/4 of 8)

– If Hallelujah puts in an appearance then keep drinking as long as he’s on screen. (I figured I would have managed to get all of one shot down in the time he spent talking.  2 and 3/4 of 8)

– If Allelujah or Somarie get offed then drink until you pass out (Nope, did not happen.  2 and 3/4 of 8)

Tieria And Ribbons “Chicken Race” Rules:

– If Tieria shoots Ribbons dead  in the first 5 minutes of episode 24 take two sips (Would have worked better if I had switched Ribbons and Tieria’s names eh?  2 and 3/4 of 8)

– If another Ribbons pops up right behind Tieria after he does so finish your drink.  (Nope since Ribbons freaking won and killed my main man.  2 and 3/4 of 8)

– If Ribbons manages to somehow descend some stairs in a new body (classic Innovator entrance) then down a keg (See above. 2 and 3/4 of 8)

– If Ribbons ends up in a final boss suit that comes bearing Fin Fangs then finish your drink (Jury’s still out on just what the GN Cannoncross can do so we’ll have to wait and see.  2 and 3/4 of 8)

– If Tieria beats Ribbons to Veda but finds that Regene has already seized control of it then down two drinks (This was kind of weird.  It seems like Regene was there in Veda but that he was on the Meister’s side all along and gave control of it to Tieria, but you know what, I still think it qualifies.  4 and 3/4 of 8)

– If Aeolia Schenberg pops up instead of Regene then down a six pack (Hahahaha no, I knew this one was unlikely.  4 and 3/4 of 8)

– If Ribbons is right and the dialogues with other races do come (as in aliens make themselves known) then down a keg (Jury’s still out but since it didn’t happen in this episode it’s a no. 4 and 3/4 of 8)

– If Ribbons Necroned for a surprise final boss then drink until you pass out (No he’s out there and ready to go toe to toe with Innovade Setsuna.  4 and 3/4 of 8)

Marina Rules:

– If Marina sings her song next week finish your drink.  (She did fuck all. 4 and 3/4 of 8)

– If the kids sing too then down a keg. (She did fuck all. 4 and 3/4 of 8)

– If everybody joins a chorus then drink until you pass out. (She did fuck all. 4 and 3/4 of 8)

Saji x Louise Rules:

– If Saji cries during his showdown with Louise take a sip ( Yeah….. 5 of 8)

– If Louise dies then take three sips (These are the three sips I most hoped I would never had to take and thank god I didn’t have to.  5 of 8)

– If Saji rescues Louise from an exploding Regnant in a manly way then drink until you pass out (No, it was Setsuna who rescues her from the exploding Regnant, but not even in a manly way, he does it off screen.  Meh, Soma already took care of the gar rescue last season anyway.  5 of 8)

The Disturbed Love Triangle Rules:

– If Graham puts in an appearance take two sips.  (Regrettably Graham chose to sit the battle out yet again.  Not like he has a unit in much shape to make a difference at the moment.  5 of 8)

– If Sumeragi manages to convince Billy to put down the gun take a sip (That’s one more sip for me.  5 and 1/4 of 8)

– If Billy shoots Sumeragi finish your drink  (No. 5 and 1/4 of 8)

– If Graham turns up to stop Billy take a sip (No No. 5 and 1/4 of 8)

– If Graham turns up and shoots Billy finish your drink (No No No, but I’m kind of hoping he turns up to shoot Ribbons. 5 and 1/4 of 8)

– If Graham turns up and Billy goes to hang out with Graham instead and to forget about his vengeance then drink until you pass out. (Lol…No 5 and 1/4 of 8)

Honorary Saint Patrick’s Day Wild Card Rule

– If Neil Dylandy pops up then start singing ”Oh Danny Boy” and then drink till you pass out.  The same rule applies if Patrick shows up alive. (I got to hear Neil Dylandy’s voice, but does that count for him popping up? I meant specifically alive so unfortunately it’s no on this one too 5 and 1/4 of 8)

Conclusion:  Gee thanks Sunrise, none of your usual stable of crazy surprises happening at all means I overdrank by about 2 and 3/4 shots.  Oh well, the episode was really good IMO and helped resolve a lot of the character conflicts and threads whilst carrying out the theme of people understanding each other better and yes it was a literal Deus Ex Machina in quite possibly the most literal interpretation possible, but it was a good Deus Ex Machina in my eyes because it was actually totally expected given all the hints about the 00 Gundam being the suit to change the world and it showcasing brief instances of the potential of Trans-Am Burst Mode prior to this whole affair.

I honestly would have been surprised if something like Trans-Am Burst Mode hadn’t happened and if it didn’t have something to do with Setsuna becoming an Innovator (Innovade actually which is like a superior form of Innovator that is evolved from a human instead of created) given all of the foreshadowing.  Anyway, glad they could also give me at least one of my wishes in Louise surviving and it’s the wish that counts because it validates everything Saji has been working towards since the beginning of season 2.  Also is it just me or did Saji finally find the courage to shoot and indirectly bring about the event that allowed Setsuna to recover Louise?  Guy did it….he bloody did it, it might not have been totally clean, but he did it. 🙂

I’m kinda confused right now. Is Innovade refering to beings like Regene and Ribbons or is it to Setsuna? On Good Haro’s blog it seems Tieria, Regene, and those like them are Innovades, beings emulating Innovators, while Setsuna is a true natural Innovator.

Saji’s levels of GAR have finally went up a few levels! 😀 Anyway this is an epic episode, and I don’t care if it was a total Deus Ex Machina. Some huge amounts of RAAAAAEEEEG!!!1 from some fans were expected, ESPECIALLY from this one certain blogger and his lackeys. (you know what I mean… ;)) Well time to drink my share while rewatching this episode in subs.

sorry for the 2nd post, I meant to say “Some huge amounts of RAAAAAEEEEG!!!1 from some fans are to be expected, and in came the flood of complaints. I think we’re gonna expect an entire wall of RAEG from this one blogger and his lackeys. ;)”

  4. 4 Kaioshin Sama March 23, 2009 at 6:19 am

@Mangaka-Chan: I’m pretty sure Innovade refers to Setsuna and Ribbons, but Regene seems to say that Setsuna is the first true Innovade. One that evolved from a human and who has the potential to use Trans-Am Burst Mode.

They kind of just threw the term out at the beginning of this episode though and I know it’s the definition for people that have surpassed and/or are superior to the clone innovators like Revive, Hilling, Divine etc, but it’s still kind of fresh and the explanation kind of confusing given that it had to compete with a whole bunch of other concepts that were realized in this episode.

@leoh: Yeah lol, I know what you mean, but considering they never actually leave that venue I’d wager their bark is far FAR worse then their bite when it comes to opinions on this show that have staying power. I expect much RAEG over Ali’s death and the usual points of the “THIS SUUUUUUUCKS!” school of anime viewing with a dose of hypocrisy for added lulz.

In all honest though other than the usual suspects I haven’t really seen a lot of complaints regarding episode 24 at all. I mean when you think about it there really doesn’t seem too be too much to complain about loudly if you’ve been following this series up until now and have at least acknowledged and agreed with the points it was trying to get across on some level and didn’t just dismiss the shows premise the very moment the Exia touched down at the AEU testing site.

Considering that what happened in this episode was properly foreshadowed (including Trans-Am Burst) and that it followed through on the themes and plot/character goals the show has set up for itself at the beginning of the season, I’d say the writings been tight and consistant IMO albeit kind of compacted in some areas. Of course if you somehow missed or didn’t acknowledge those themes and the foreshadowing then it probably looks like a whole load of BS.

I kinda know what you mean, with one of the messages being “Revenge solves nothing” which was clearly shown with Louise and Andrei. As for Lyle finally giving Ali his comeuppance, I don’t know. There were all these character conflicts in one episode coming to their height, but I didn’t know exactly how they would’ve been solved. Trans-Am Burst I didn’t see coming, but just accepted it, as it wrapped up the character conflicts nicely. Throughout the series, there wasn’t anything I could disagree with. I guess I could be a blind fan. Going a bit off-topic, as an 18-year-old average high school student I don’t have a good level of intelligence like you so it takes me time to rewatch these episodes and make whatever few statements I could come up with. TBH, the entire Gundam series was actually one of the few anime series that made me think, besides Wolf’s Rain and Blood+. Tales of the Abyss could count, but I’ve only played the game.

@leoh: Oh I saw something like Trans-Am Burst coming. Remember that since the very end of the first season where they first unveiled the 00 they’ve been hinting that it was a machine with the power to change the world and that Setsuna swore he was going to put an end to the distortion together with Gundam. That’s exactly what happened here, Setsuna putting an end to the distortion of people’s wills along with the Gundam’s power. 00 couldn’t have activated Trans-Am Burst without Setsuna being an Innovade and Setsuna couldn’t have done anything without the 0-Raiser to use.

  7. 7 deathkillz March 23, 2009 at 10:50 am

Hell yea was it good Deus Ex Machina and one which I saw coming from a mile away. Not the Burst mode exactly but I suspected that Setsuna will get another powerup since frankly, it isn’t a gundam series if they don’t have upgrades every now and then (and since they “milked” 00-raiser for long enough, such a thing came about at the right time). In my mind I think “this is awesome!” for views listen in the linebarrel entry.

Meanwhile, thanks Kaio for getting me tipsy~

  8. 8 Amuro1X March 23, 2009 at 3:35 pm

Yo Kaio, you actually have it backwards. Everyone we thought was an Innovator? Those are the Innovades. Setsuna is actually the ONLY Innovator. Though Ribbons was an Innovade, he apparently has evolved beyond that point. what that means exactly we’ll find out next episode I’m guessing.

  9. 9 Zetatrain March 23, 2009 at 4:11 pm

While I’m not a fan of deus ex machina devices, the trans am burst scene is an exception, especially since it was hinted that something like this would happen. Like Kaioshin said, it would be surprising if something like this did not happen. Then again people on the forums will bitch and moan about it and about the fact that Anderi and Billy did not die like they wanted them to.

Is it just me or does anyone else think the trans am burst scene looked a lot like the Nu Gundam’s psychoframe overload from CCA?

Overall, good episode but after everything that happened in this episode I hope that the last one won’t just boil down to Setsuna taking down Ribbons. Personally I would like to see these aliens make an appearance and if that happens I wonder if Gundam 00 will get a sequel.

On a side note, I think Setsuna is an innovator and Tieria, Ribbons, and his lackeys are innovades, then again the subs i was watching could have gotten the two reversed.

  10. 10 sadakups March 23, 2009 at 11:38 pm

I’m just wondering about this: Did Tieria intended to get shot by Ribbons so that he and Regene can retake Veda? Was Regene’s consciousness able to reach Tieria and pull-off such plan? Or is this part of the Innovades concept?

  11. 11 Kaioshin Sama March 24, 2009 at 3:26 am

@Sadakups: No it just sort of happened that way. Also I wonder about Regene because while it seems like for now he is cooperating with Tieria because getting even with Ribbons is more important, who is too know what he’s going to try and do afterward. Will he make peace with Tieria for that bro end that some are talking about or try to seize power for himself? Could be another layer to the final episode.

  12. 12 sadakups March 24, 2009 at 4:08 am

Regardless of which, I’m actually happy that Saji X Louise got their just ends. All of Saji’s hard work (or maybe Setsuna’s) has paid off.

I’m still crossing my fingers that nothing idiotic like one of them dying in the final episode happens.

I have a feeling the Mr Bushido will show up in the next episode, but instead of being the post-boss fight after Setsuna takes on Ribbons, I see him helping out… then die.

As for Marina… yeah, see you at the epilogue, you useless piece of animation pixels. You’ll just bear fruit of everybody’s hard work by taking care of those children, as always.

  13. 13 Kaioshin Sama March 24, 2009 at 5:05 am

@Sadakups: They seem pretty far away from where the final battle is going to be happening so I just don’t see it as likely. As for Marina….yeah I never though they’d make a character that made Lacus and Relena seem likeable and even cool.

  14. 14 Myssa Rei March 24, 2009 at 6:21 am

While the possibility of one final ace left for the 00-Raiser to play was alluded for a while, I’m sure many people didn’t expect such an all-encompassing ‘solution’ to what boils down to a lack of proper communication between people. Yes, it was a Deus Ex Machina, but I won’t say it’s a GOOD one, and that’s saying something about a franchise where human will stops a massive asteroid-factory from crashing to Earth and the spirits of the fallen empowering a war machine (and its pilot) beyond its limits.

  15. 15 Kaioshin Sama March 24, 2009 at 7:32 am

@Myssa Rei: Well if they didn’t then I would say they weren’t paying enough attention to all the clues. And it really wasn’t that all encompassing, it only works if the people care enough deep down to try and make their respective peaces. Case in point Ali, Ribbons, Revive, Hilling and the clones who experienced zero change in how they were reacting to the battle or anyone else.

As for the people that did change, there was generally something interfering with their impression of others that couldn’t be resolved without the type of phenomenon the GN Particles create. With Louise it was her brainwashing and link to Ribbons that bordered on mind control that needed severing, with Billy it was the fact that he didn’t trust anything Sumeragi said anymore so he needed a chance to read her thoughts to know she was being sincere, same with Andrei about Sergei and needing to hear what Soma had to say about Sergei (although the guy still has some MASSIVE issues if that is what he killed his father over). With Tieria it was needed to bridge the gap between his remaining concious mind and Veda and to sever Ribbons link to it so Tieria could assume full control. As for Lasse I’m still not quite sure what was going on with him at all so that one I’ll give to the people who just want to nitpick the episode. And we all know there are some folks out their who still love themselves a good bashing more then enjoying the show on any level. 😉

And there’s still that nagging issue of Ribbons to deal with so it’s not all over and it didn’t solve all problems either. It’s not a cure all like some are making it out to be, it’s more like another one of Aeolia’s tools for helping the characters bring about the world he envisioned.

I don’t know, after ages of watching Gundam series where characters who otherwise wouldn’t end up fighting and/or killing each other because of being on the wrong side of the conflict when all they really had to do to make up was find a chance to better communicate, something like this felt a long time coming. And considering 0-Raisers trump card and potential to “change the world” has been alluded to for a while, I can safely say it fits with what has been foreshadowed.

Of course if one is a viewer who was desperately expecting a blood bath instead of some characters settling their differences and one who subscribes to an absolutist idea of what Gundam should and should not have as a theme or plot point then this episode isn’t likely to hit home with you much.

P.S: And yes in case your wondering I’ve read the supplementary materials and GN Particles are right up there with Getter Rays in the sheer amount of things they are capable of. Of the top of my head:

    – When properly harnessed they are a clean renewable source of energy (obvious)

    – They possess a slight healing factor (Like a lesser Bacta and with what happened when he resisted the poisoning from Ali shooting him)

    – They enable transmission of thought from one human being to another when an area becomes saturated with them, though not if it’s not at least subconsiously desired (think of it like an added path of neurons filling the gap between one brain and another, also see the Newtype space that we’ve seen many times before)

    – They can give human beings the ability to resist Innovator mind control/brainwashing if they wish so. (Like what happened with Louise and Setsuna pre-Innovator promotion in that one episode)

    – Upon long term exposure to them in high amounts they will eventually mutate a normal human being into a true innovator (it’s like a more visible and explicable promotion to Newtype status if this were U.C Gundam)

Convenient, yes, not explained before it was ever needed in this episode, no. It’s not an ass pull Deus Ex Machina if it’s already been shown that GN Particles can do these things, the only difference is that it was on a wide scale thanks to the Burst Mode which was alluded to in hints from dialogue early on in the season and even described in last episodes preview.

Know what, times like these make me wonder why did you not blog each episode for Season 2.

  17. 17 ghostlightning March 25, 2009 at 1:49 am

As much as I am not fond of the Trans-Am burst, I don’t think it’s an ass-pull.

I believe it fits within the tradition in mecha anime that includes (the finales of):

    Space Runaway Ideon
    Gao Gai Gar final
    Macross Frontier
    End of Evangelion
    Char’s Counterattack

There may be more, but this is what I recall at the moment. It would be premature or lazy to dismiss this phenomenon in 00 24 without considering the above works and whether one appreciates the conveniences of apocalyptic/godly powers that resolve almost everything in the narrative.

  18. 18 Kaioshin Sama March 25, 2009 at 2:04 am

@ghostlightning: A lot of it comes down to the cool factor in the end I think, but that’s mecha anime for you, love it or hate it. Though I wouldn’t even come close to putting Trans-Am Burst on the tier of godly powers.
