Fullmetal 00 Alchemist Brotherhood Second Series (Who’s Cast Is This Anyway?)

snapshot20090408011521

Well I Think The Garest Character Of The Season Award Has Been Decided

I’ll just save the time and tell people my thoughts on the first episode right now.  It was nonstop fun the whole way through, but kind of lacking in focus.  Like Shin Mazinger it throws a lot of characters and plot points at us at once, but also like Shin Mazinger it appears that Brotherhood is also going the route of starting in the middle or near the end of the story and then going back to the beginning to show how it happened…..much like the original FMA series.

With that out of the way what I’d rather talk about now is the bizarre (or not so bizarre if you subscribe to my theory that BONES and Sunrise are just different studios in name only and are still joined by a thin, just barely visible fibre at the hip) similarities between the staff and cast behind this show and that of Gundam 00 and MS Igloo.

First the staff.  That I know of at least two key figures in the audio/visual section of the team for Brotherhood worked on Gundam 00 including the art director, sound director.  Also the overall designer and head writer also worked on MS Igloo.  I don’t know how these studios are supposed to be entirely seperate entities when they share staff like this all the time (you don’t help the competition unless they are friendly), but hey, I guess name changes everything right?

As for the cast, if this is a coincidence then it is huge one:

Romi Paku(VA)=Edward Elric(FMA)=Regene Regetta(00)

Rie Kugimiya(VA)=Alphonse Elric(FMA)=Nena Trinity(00)

Shinichiro Miki(VA)=Roy Mustang(FMA)=Lockon Stratos(00)

Biichi Sato(VA)=Heimans Breda(FMA)=Section Chief Mahal(00)

Hiroyuki Yoshino(VA)=Kimblee(FMA)=Allelujah Haptism(00)

Keiji Fujiwara(VA)=Maes Hughes(FMA)=Ali Al Saachez(00)

Kenji Hamada(VA)=Vato Falman(FMA)=Patrick Colasawar(00)

Minami Takayama(VA)=Envy(FMA)=Kati Mannequin(00)

Tetsu Shiratori(VA)=Gluttony(FMA)=Andrei Smirnov(00)

Yuji Ueda(VA)=Jean Havoc(FMA)=Billy Katagiri(00)

Ten.  Ten Major Cast Members in FMA also played Major Roles in 00  Four.  Four Key Staff Members in FMA also played Key role in the making of either Gundam 00 or MS Igloo…….Same Cast, Same AV Team, Same Writer, Same Studio, Different In Name Only, Judgement Plaintiff, Now GTFO!

Okay well actually I do just want to mention that I thought the music score was fantastic, but then again that is to be expected from Senju Akira.  The animation while fluid felt a little off at times as well as inconsistent, much like was the case with K-On.  Also while not Again I can’t help but wonder if this is just going to be the standard for this season’s big budget productions.  Anyway, I guess this was meant to be an episode to reintroduce us to the Fullmetal Alchemist setting (One I absolutely love by the way.  Especially the Central City layout and the State Army uniforms) and characters, but I also hope that things will be a bit more focused and events more coherently tied together the next time around.  I have a feeling it will though.

Just a couple more things and then I’m done.  Number 1, Hidekatsu Shiba who voices the manly man Fuhrer King Bradley while awesome in this will never be as awesome again as he was here:

Ramble On You Crazy Mofo

Second is the ending:

Not only do I like the track, but I am loving the minimalist artwork here.  Probably the best ending I’ve seen so far this season

Rating:  Seven And A Half Out Of Ten

P.S:  No I don’t actually believe a word I just said, but the coincidences and shared staff and cast members are starting to pile up and I can’t help but wonder if unofficially BONES and Sunrise are still working together or are at least partners.  I might have to start referring to either as Bonesrise now or something…..Sun Bones?

It was sunrise all along i think (both of them), just like shueisha (doing weekly jump) and kadokawa (doing weekly shonen) but still under the same higher roof.

My guess: since Cowboy Bebop and Escaflowne were Sunrise’s, if i’m not mistaken, but then the staffs thought monopoly is not good and taking a little detour (10 years, in this case) on entrepreneurship, but then finally decided monopoly is the way😛

Who makes the biggest yens other than Toei (pokemon), Sunrise (toy sales), and Pierrot (widest license distribution ever for naruto & bleach)?

Know what, it would be complete if Seiji Mizushima was the director for FMA2 just like he did in the first one.

I totally don’t get why they’re reanimating this show. It was fine the way it was and isn’t dated at all even if the original wasn’t HD. I wish they could find better things to do, then reanimate not-so-old shows. Like if you’re going to do a remake, at least remake something that could benefit massively from a well executed remake!

Yeah the remake/adaptation thing is getting a bit much and it wasn’t really like that when I first got into anime. The 80’s were probably the peak for fully in-house productions. Now it seems like only a handful of studios are making their own new shows anymore, but the thing that gets me is that BONES is among those studios, yet they are remaking an adaptation. The only show I can think of off the top of my head that came out this season that wasn’t a remake or an adaptation is Basquash. That’s up next by the way, but probably tomorrow as I have a date with some X-Com UFO Defense.

The main reason is, really, a chance to stick closer to the plot of the source material, because the story diverged WILDLY from Maes’ death onwards. There’s the fact that, for example, the big bad is totally different (Dante vs. ‘Father’), the identities of the Homunculi are totally different (Anime Sloth vs. Manga Sloth is a CLEAR example), differing character roles (the sadistic Anime Kimblee vs. the cold but driven Manga Kimblee) plus all the non-Amnestris alchemists like Ling.

Please do some research first before saying, ‘gee, its a waste for a Studio to do a more-faithful remake’.

  6. 6 Kaioshin Sama April 9, 2009 at 10:15 am

Well I liked the original FMA even if it wasn’t faithful. I have no problem with them doing another version that is closer to the manga, but personally I think that sticking verbatim to the source as a concept is….well I can’t even think of a word to describe it (blah tired), but I think that if a show is still enjoyed by many then at the end of the day it’s not really the end of the bloody world if there are some changes from the source like people make it out to be nowadays. Kind of like with this whole “it’s too ridiculous waaaaah epic fail!” trend that starting to get really dumb.

If a show is still fun and interesting to watch then does it REALLY matter how realistic or non-“ridiculous” (whatever the criteria for “ridiculous” is supposed to be nowadays) it is. All I can say to that one is that Gainax should be counting their blessings that they got Gurren Lagann off at a time before it became the devil’s work to go over the top with anything. What were we talking about again?

  7. 7 Myssa Rei April 9, 2009 at 12:22 pm

You need to take a rest Kaioh, since you seem to be confusing ‘Faithfulness to Source Material’ to ‘Stretching Disbelief in the pursuit of Enjoyment’. Legend of Galactic Heroes is the former. Gurren Lagann, being original material is NOT like the latter.

  8. 8 Myssa Rei April 9, 2009 at 12:24 pm

As for the FMA Remake issue, it’s one of those things that really broke the fandom in two, as there are many who only watched the anime (and enjoyed it), and were NOT familiar with the manga, and there are those who know the manga and loved the anime until it diverged WILDLY from the source. Heck, Sloth and Pride weren’t even the same people, plus the concepts of the Homunculi are different as well. And I DID mention the different Big Bads (and really, a lot of people were disappointed with Dante).

You haven’t watched Sengoku Basara have you.

I just saw the first episode of Eden of the East. I dunno how you feel about Kenji Kamiyama but this is a wholly original series written by him. So far so good, the series looks to be quite promising, probably the best first episode this season if you’re into Kamiyama’s style.

Great blog! Is your theme custom made or did you download it from somewhere?

A design like yours with a few simple tweeks would really make my blog
jump out. Please let me know where you got your theme.
    With thanks

Hey would you mind sharing which blog platform you’re using?
I’m planning to start my own blog soon but I’m having a difficult time deciding between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal.
The reason I ask is because your design and style seems different then most blogs and I’m
    looking for something completely unique.
P.S Sorry for being off-topic but I had to ask!
