NEEDLESS episode 15 ~ Saten the unbeatable?

No pantsu ❤

Once again, apologies for the lateness of this entry (as well as skipping episode 14) but nonetheless NEEDLESS is still the best series even when accounting for this new season that had just started 😀

Thoughts: Just a quick recap of the previous episode, Kuchinashi’s ultimate attack caused everyone to fall into paradise where they had hallucinations or their dreams and desires. It was pretty interesting in itself to see what each character’s desires were asides from the already established Seto wanting money or Solva wanting to rule the world, Gido apparently was a bishie when he was x years younger and Eve’s desire is to be able to remember names properly…except Yamada is officially called Yamada. Blade turned out to be unaffected by this ability at all though as his ultimate desire is already fulfilled looking at his harem of girls. Epicness soon followed as he then unleashed a whole load of butt hurt onto Setsuna’s group but his killing spree was inevitable stopped in the end by Saten himself.

Which brings us to this episode where Saten proves himself to be more than a mean looking badass. Just like what happened with the encounter with Uten, Saten is coming across as some kind of god with more than one fragment and thus makes him an extremely powerful boss even for Blade. What was more surprising is that asides from his fire and ice attacks, he is also able to control wind and somehow is even able to absorb Blade’s flame attacks. Together with his insane strength and speed, it seems like he may even have a fragment similar to Blade’s. However, while Disk is able to scan Blade using her fragment, her powers are completely ineffective when used to scan Saten and they aren’t able to figure out just exactly what is up with Saten’s fragment. Not even Blade’s forced fragment memorization trick using his gem was able to allow him to use Saten’s attack.

But what I found utterly hilarious was that Blade’s group (being the good guys) won’t be caught playing fair when faced with an impossible enemy to fight against and while Blade concluded that Saten was no longer any use to him since he isn’t able to copy his ability, the whole team prepares to attack him all at once. Surely not even Saten would be handle this kind of attack right? But the tables turn once more when Saten reveals that he isn’t alone and sends the group a nice present…in the form of the final of the 4 heavenly guards who looks suspiciously like someone we should all know the identity of. I wonder what Yamada would say when her mask falls off…

The episode quality on the whole was excellent…except for one part where all budget went to hell and I had deja vu of the scene between Blade and Kuchinashi back in the past. Please just remove that style of animation forever, it’s an eyesore >.>

I think the introduction of the new enemy is the most exciting thing seen so far here as she seems to be extremely strong…but this doesn’t reflect they way she struggled with a testament back in episode 1 as well as why she would be working with the enemy in the first place. Maybe Kurumi did some more of her brainwashing? As for Saten, he is crazily strong. To be able to take on Eve with one hand and Blade with the other just hows that he isn’t normal and just screams GARNESS when he blows the two of them away with his flames. I am beginning to wonder weather he is also a failed test subject of the ADAM PROJECT at this rate…

As a final note, the OP/ED has changed since episode 14 and they are no where near as good as the original…OTZ…

Preview: The mask drops! What face will pop up behind that?

It’s a shame but Setsuna owes Saten one for saving her annoying ass

Free Image Hosting at

Time’s up girl, you failed

Free Image Hosting at

Seems like there is still some use for Kurumi’s dead body

Free Image Hosting at

So Saten puts her under deep freeze (I wonder if we will see her being revived)

Free Image Hosting at

Mio isn’t at her fittest but she sure as heck doesn’t look weakened

Free Image Hosting at

Time for Saten to kick ass

Free Image Hosting at

Somehow…the way Mio said “bye bye” gave me the chills of what’s to come

Free Image Hosting at

Oh and one more thing before they leave (a gust of wind appears)

Free Image Hosting at

Good job! ^^b

Free Image Hosting at

So let the fight begin

Free Image Hosting at

Strength wise they are seem even

Free Image Hosting at

But it should be no problem knowing that Saten uses only ice attacks

Free Image Hosting at

or so they thought

Free Image Hosting at

“Rocket punch initiate!”

Free Image Hosting at

Or perhaps it’s better to call it pew pew cannon

Free Image Hosting at

*Jaw drops*

Free Image Hosting at

“Why the fuck did he just shoot out fire”

Free Image Hosting at

GARNESS just seems to seep out of his pores

Free Image Hosting at

“I will defeat you will the abilities of my fallen comrades”

Free Image Hosting at

Badass Vulcan shock ignition incoming

Free Image Hosting at

But GARness does not falter

Free Image Hosting at

Not even maiden restriction was able to get close to Saten which left Blade with no choice but…

Free Image Hosting at

…to go for the old fashion head butt attack!

Free Image Hosting at

Memorized ~

Free Image Hosting at

Random shot of Seto looking cute 😀

Free Image Hosting at

Saten’s cannon!!!

Free Image Hosting at

Or not…Blade fired blanks

Free Image Hosting at

“tsk tsk, you no use my attack”

Free Image Hosting at

Even worse is that Disk can’t identify his fragment

Free Image Hosting at

But Blade isn’t one to play fair

Free Image Hosting at

Seto sneak attack!!!

Free Image Hosting at

Prepare to get gangbanged

Free Image Hosting at

But you don’t expect Saten to fight this all alone

Free Image Hosting at

Here comes a new challenger

Free Image Hosting at

I have no idea who she is but this is the coolest shot I’ve seen all week. Plus she is wearing no pantsu 😀

Free Image Hosting at

Yamada said something bad and got pounced on

Free Image Hosting at

First attack from the mysterious enemy

Free Image Hosting at

“I will take you weaklings on”

Free Image Hosting at

“Your fucked >.>”

Free Image Hosting at

“AAAAAAAMENNNNN!” (just where did he pull that bible from)

Free Image Hosting at

Blade’s bondage strings don’t work on Saten

Free Image Hosting at

And neither does Eve’s cannon

Free Image Hosting at

Nor does Blade’s sneak attack

So in the end Yamada continues to wrack his brains in thinking what ability Saten has

While Saten remains as imposing as ever

Going out on a limb to say that he’s a cyborg.
And am I the only one who thinks that the new enemy is Yamada’s brainwashed sister.

  2. 2 taruppu October 11, 2009 at 8:53 pm

@Blade Nah, I don’t think you’re the only one making that assumption.

Can’t wait untill the next episode! And yeah, animation/art had a really bad breakdown at one point. That kind of style can be nice for one still pic to support a funny moment, but not for as long as they did in this ep.

  3. 3 Robotech Master October 11, 2009 at 9:06 pm

Yeah, you’d be correct about her identity. Except the brainwashed part. Bad guy all along.

If I recall correctly Saten’s ability is absorbing the heat and thermal energy from matter. When he deprives matter of all heat it freezes, and his beams/force fields come from the heat he absorbed.

I’m glad you screencapped that one, I thought I had imagined it.

Wow the art looks terrible this week.

I expected her to be the sister since they first talked about the mysterious fourth fighter. The green hair and skimpy outfit is obvious. I was already expecting her to appear. First I thought she would appear on ep 14 but it was a illusion.

As for Saten. I think his ability requires those arm things he has on. All his abilities seem to charge up from inside the holes of those things so they must be related to his fragment and why Blade can’t use his fragment. Robotech Master seems to have a solid plan.

  7. 7 obvious October 12, 2009 at 5:24 pm

it’s obviously his sister, hair, eyes, and power type seem to be a perfect match.

as for saten, his ability is quite obviously energy absorption with his hands: not certain about kinetic, though that would explain his ability to resist blade’s strength, but definitely fire-type attacks and the surrounding environment (violating the rules of physics as energy is not supposed to flow that way). that is why his attack, coming from one ability has 2-3 stages:

    1. absorb and store energy in the devices on his arms. in the presence of a high-energy attack, it is not necessary to drain the environment, otherwise he must first perform what was assumed to be a “frost” attack.
    2. release energy, in the form of his 4th wave attack.
    3. (optional?) cool down. the wind spiral he first used to beat off blade’s fragrance was probably updraft from the rapidly cooling of the device on his arm after the 4th wave attack. whether it is necessary to perform this step i do not know. it is likely that the force from this stage was what he used to break blade’s kondata string, i’m too lazy to go back and see if it was performed in the proper 1-2-3 sequence or not.

motive: more complicated. clearly has his own agenda, but it’s obscure. hardly to become the next supervillain, since he’s getting his ass kicked the moment yamada figures out his fragment, and will be useless as a fighter. possibly planning revenge on simeon, which would explain his helping the infiltrators in a hopeless situation. it’s doubtful that he saved them just to kill them himself and earn a distinction with arclight. it’s highly unlikely that his plan, whatever it is, will be foiled this early on, so it’s unlikely that his true goal is to protect simeon, or at least arclight.
in the end, his goal is, whatever the details, to betray arclight whom he cannot take head-on because he blows and arclight is buff.

  8. 8 Rouenne October 15, 2009 at 2:04 am

The more I watch this the more I think that Cruz needs a fragment

  9. 9 taruppu October 15, 2009 at 10:20 am

@Rouenne Nah, that would probably really mess up the flow of the anime. It’s good having a powerless main character. Yamada is there to think his way out of a mess.

  10. 10 fail October 15, 2009 at 6:27 pm

what yamada needs is a dick. priority 1. then a fragment. even if he doesn’t wet his pants every episode now, he’s still useless. the “fag” character type is truly annoying.

  11. 11 deathkillz October 16, 2009 at 9:45 am

Utter fail there Mr fail. You are mistaking real fear with “wetting one’s pants” and frankly Yamada falls into the former category nor is he useless. Funny how he was the first to awake from Kuchinashi’s attack too.

  12. 12 fail October 18, 2009 at 4:57 am

unfortunately i must turn the tables on you. him waking from that pathetic excuse of an attack only makes him gayer. it shows that he has now reached the pinnacle of his glory: becoming the “ooh i’ve got a brain (compared to completely brainless characters in a very silly anime) character but i still suck dick at everything else”. none of the characters are particularly developed, complex or interesting, but he just jumps off the page as a complete weakling, making him the gayest (yes, gayer than the professor) one of them all. fail at failing me mr. deadskillz.

  13. 13 Rouenne October 19, 2009 at 4:11 am

Well I wouldn’t call Cruz gay but dude all the characters have some sort of crazy and funny stand, except fot Cruz, also this is a fighting action anime, what’s the point of a main character in an anime like this if he can’t fight? Cruz is just way too simple as a character, the others may have less development but at least they can get you a laugh with their personalities or surprise you during action. Cruz thinking helps, sure but it would be much more interesting to see him putting that brain in his own fights, if he could, i don’t know, use “Ice” for example it would be really cool to see how he uses the freezing to defeat opponents that are overpowering him

Right now all he does is just be shocked by situations, cry around almost everything and be related to the action.

In this kind of anime, that would have to be a minor character (the professor at least has to do with Adam’s birth and all) but as a main protagonist he is a wasted character.

  14. 14 Robotech Master October 19, 2009 at 4:27 pm

Cruz is indeed implied to have a Fragment; one of the most potent ones in fact, but he doesn’t know how to use it.

And I wouldn’t worry about him being a ‘wasted’ character. The story takes a major turn after the PF Zero Blast, during which almost the entire focus is on him (and Disc’s head) taking the initiative to find everyone else.

I think he’s found Eve (but she’s too weak to fight), but Adam hasn’t been found so he’s been out of the manga for a few volumes.

  15. 15 Rouenne November 23, 2009 at 3:29 am

Why did the needless reviews stop?

  16. 16 taruppu December 16, 2009 at 9:18 pm

That’s what I’d like to know. I enjoyed reading them and now that the series has ended it has become ….needless… lol yeah I know bad pun. Well, at least the manga is still going strong.

Normally I don’t learn article on blogs, but I would like to say that this write-up
very compelled me to try and do so! Your writing taste has been amazed me.
    Thank you, quite great article.
