Gundam 00 Second Season Information

Alive and Kicking

I swore to myself that I would never quote or post anything from another Newtype article again, but this information doesn’t seem to deceitful….just limited.  Here I have compiled everything I know about the second season of Gundam 00 and my thoughts on the information.

Looks Much Better When You Don’t See An Awful Looking Blown Up Newtype Commerical Lineart Doesn’t It?

Do I Really Need To Explain Who These Guys Are?

Characters From Right To Left:
Setsuna F. Seiei – 21-years-old. Lived as a boy soldier in his native Kurdish and became a Gundam Meister with Celestial Being. Engaged in one-on-one combat with Graham in a final battle. Went missing. 4 years passed. What does he think of as he looks at the world without conflict the Earth Sphere Federation ushered in?

Setsuna takes a leadership role in the second season. He wanders the world while knowing that peace is achieved by the Feddies through the distortion of truth. This is his motivation.  Setsuna is a man who can only fight. He is conscious of the hypocrisy of “extermination of war through military prowess”. However, it is necessary to stop imminent war. Therefore he appears more militaristic than before. He tries not to get swayed towards the pacifist road that the heroine-like Marina takes.

Mission: To sever the distortion caused by the false peace from the world.

Mishizuma’s comments –

Setsuna has greatly changed internally in the last 4 years. He resents the state of the current world and is conflicted about whether his actions were correct.

Lockon Stratos – Expert marksman and Gundam Meister affiliated with Celestial Being. 4 years ago, he and his bitter enemy Saachez shot each other simultaneously and (*unreadable portion*) This Lockon (*unreadable*) heads to the battlefield together with his partner Haro and, as a Gundam Meister, pilots the Keldim Gundam.

Mission: The bullet that shoots the spark, shakes history again

Mishizuma’s comments –

He is here after shouldering inevitable circumstance and joining CB. This time, to visually showcase the confrontation with the “Arrows”, the Meisters’ uniforms are seen.   Lockon is dead. He will not be revived.

 Allelujah Haptism – (Nothing listed)

Mishizuma’s Comments –

Allelujah is changed by his surrounding environments. Whether the cross that previously killed his comrades affect him will become an important point.

Mission: What does the will to unite see in the new world?

Tieria Erde – Age unknown. Seriously injured in the decisive final battle in which he flew the Gundam Nadleeh but he was rescued by an organization and his life saved. Afterwards, he did his best to rebuild Celestial Being. Previously, he had thought of Veda as an absolute being but now he looks for the meaning of his personal struggle.

Mishizuma’s Comments –

Seriously injured in the decisive final battle in which he flew the Gundam Nadleeh but he was rescued by an organization and his life saved. Afterwards, he did his best to rebuild Celestial Being. Presently he looks for the meaning of his personal struggle.

Mission: One chooses and starts to walk the road to the future

At Long Last The New Gundams

Mecha From Right To Left:

GN-0000 00 Gundam – New generation Gundam developed as a successor unit to the Gundam Exia. A formidable mecha equipped with 2 GN Drives on its shoulders, it boasts astounding GN particle emission and its performance overwhelms that of all other mobile suits. Pilot: Setsuna F. Seiei

Keldim Gundam

Arios Gundam

Selavii Gundam – A heavy armament model piloted by Tieria Erde that largely carries over features of the Gundam Virtue. Furthermore, it was developed with the intent of strengthening offense and while the 2 shoulder-equipped GN cannons are simple in form, their firepower far exceeds the Virtue’s.

General Plot Comments By Mishizuma:

Second Season is Federation vs. Anti-Federation.

The story follows the confrontation between the independent security enforcement organization within the Federation called “Arrows” which suppresses the Anti-Federation elements.

Gundam Meisters gather again to pilot Gundams. Their purpose is still to “extermination of war through military prowess”. However, they act as people whose Gundams were entrusted to by Aeolia.

The story of 00 has three overlapping layers, one is Aeolia’s plan, another is the Meisters’, and the last is how war affects the normal citizens who get involved. Saji is involved in CB’s fight in an unexpected way. Louise’s situation in the last episode of the first season will be made clear. The relationship between Saji and Louise exist in one axis.

My Thoughts:

Well first let’s talk about the characters.  Setsuna seems to have taken everything that happened in the last conflict and developed an even angrier personality over it.  You could sort of see the fury in his discussion with Alejandro and it awoken something in him that has probably influenced his decisions over the last 4 years.  He also knows the truth about everything that went on and likely overheard Alejandro’s conversation with Ribbons.  I like the fact that he doesn’t seem hypocritical like Kira Yamato and realizes that a certain amount of force is required to dispel a greater evil and effort at warfare.  He appreciates Marina’s advice and it seems to have had an effect on him, but I think what it did more then anything is clear his head as to what he really needs to do.  This development we pretty much saw during the first season.  Marina was always sort of portrayed as wrong by Mishizuma in the first season as well as not fighting would only have gotten his friends even more…..errrr owned.

Lockon is most definitely not the original Lockon and instead his brother Lyle Dylandy.  How effective then could he be as a sniper unless Lyle underwent the same training.  Experience would also be an issue.  This guys is probably going to be the newbie of the group who is the weak link where Lockon was strong.  After all, apparently Setsuna is supposed to take on the leadership role.

Allelujah remains a mystery as ever and the article barely mentions anything about him other then a hint that he might become less introverted as time goes on like Tieria.  I assume they want to keep the connection between him and Soma hidden for a little while longer as well.  Pssst….my bet is that she’s his sister.

Tieria, my main man is still looking as handsome as ever.  Apparently he was severerly injured in the final battle of season 1 but was rescued and his life saved. (rebuilt?) Continuing to further his humanity, it seems he’s finally dropped Veda as a god figure and is trying to develop himself as an individual rather then a cog in the Celestial Beings workings.  I would have thought he would take over the role as leader seeing as how he seemed to be equal in rank to Sumeragi in season 1, but I guess not.  I also imagine he and Setsuna won’t fight nearly as often but who knows.

That’s it, no information on any other characters.  See that’s why I sort of hate Newtype, they never give enough info, but if I had to take a guess, most of the formerly Union, AEU and HRL characters are with the Arrows with the possible exception of Sergei.  Let’s move on to the mecha then.

So the 00 Gundam is revealed to be quite powerful.  How powerful remains to be seen, but then we finally have our other 3 Gundams.  The designs are indeed simplified or rather seem scaled down as well.  It kind of reminds me of Gundam Seed destiny where Gundam was a recolour of the ones from Gundam Seed, but with a difference.  Here I get the sense of more of a literal rebuilding of the original Gundams in haste for whatever reason.  This also isn’t the first time we’ve seen a variation on the original GN series either as there were units like the Gundam Exia Avalanche, Gundam Plutone etc beforehand.  Plus the characters will probably want to have mobile suits as close to the original ones they gained experience with for maximum effieciency.  These suits are customized for the actual pilots.  They are no accidental (I’m assuming unless the first episode of Season 2 is a Gundamjack) pilots, but elite soldiers at this point who need to make use of the fighting styles they’ve learned in the past.  Especially since things aren’t going to be nearly as easy in the early stages this time around.  GN technology is now common and the Earth Federation is far more powerful then the original 3 nations combined.  They damn well better be taking every advantage possible.

Here’s an image of how they compare to their original counterparts.

I’m liking all the redesigns except for Selavii Gundam which just looks to damn boxy.  I mean I know Virtue had the nickname “Fatass Gundam” but now it just looks to slim, like somethings not quite right about it.  00’s design I’ve liked since day one and the Arios actually looks touched up from the Kyrios.  Come to think of it, most of them aren’t really scaled down or simplified looking at all.  They look more like the next model in their individual line then anything.

The plot sort of sounds like it has a Zeta Gundam esque, AEUG vs. Titans feel to it, but here’s the thing, Celestial Being or whatever it’s going to be called now are no saints.  They started this and now they are trying to set right what they screwed up it seems.  The game is likely to still be Guerilla warfare, but with a less sinister purpose in mind.  It also seems that Aeolia was indeed a good guy all along and that we are going to find out what his intended plans were in this season.  That said, before I leave, Ali, Graham, and Patrick, ace pilots for the Arrows.  Sergei, member of the Arrows but with quiet dissent and will probably take Soma along with him and try to defect at some point.  Calling it.  That’s it……go home, nothing more to see here.

I do not know anything about G00, much less S2, so I shall think epic thoughts of epic Gundam Units instead.

I’m really eager to see the explanation they put up for the Lockon cases. It doesn’t make much sense to kill off Lockon and have his twin replacing his position. This is just as bad as waking him up after sending him to his deathbed (which is probably not the case here). But then again, G00 hasn’t disappointed me yet with its reasonings, so I hope that they won’t bullshit in this case.

The uniform looks better than their casual wears (at least, better than Alle’s and Lockon’s) in season 1. Looks like Yun Koga did learn something about tight tops (though I see she still favors tight pants).

On a private note, you think Tieria is “handsome”? (Or is it me who couldn’t catch the sarcasm here?)

  3. 3 Kaioshin Sama July 8, 2008 at 7:27 pm

@Any: No I was joking at how they made him look as much like a pretty boy as possible and how most people thought he was a girl the first time his character design was introduced. The whole “handsome” quip also goes back to Gundam Seed and Kira’s tendency to come out looking even more pretty boyish after just having his unit completely destroyed around him then before, without bearing any sort of injuries and scars. Must be a coordinator/innovator thing. Tiera and Kira are also the kind of characters who could probably have a control console blow up in their face and the result be like having corrective plastic surgery.

He is my favourite character though.

BIG surprise there with ‘Lockon’, though I wonder what would have pushed the guy to take up his brother’s cause? I mean, from what’s been hinted in the first season, he looks pretty normal (at least compared to his brother). Also, geez, I guess the fab four are going to stir up trouble again, given what’s been said about the ‘false’ peace (it was brought and is still probably enforced by force). Well, soldiers will be soldiers, after all…

Why do i get the feeling Crusader’s not going to like this direction…

I hope that they focus on propaganda and the political smoke and mirrors regarding the Arrows as that was an angle i always thought was missing from Zeta Gundam.

Also what do you think regarding the english dubb? I wasn’t to keen on Brad Swaile at first but after seeing the trailer i think he has the potential to put up a good interpretation of Setsuna.

  6. 6 Kaioshin Sama July 9, 2008 at 12:05 am

@Myssa: I don’t think they are The Beatles.

@BeInvoked: Well that’s assuming Crusader actually takes anything into consideration in the first place. I assume we are going to be hearing about how the propaganda you and I are a little interested in does not measure up to the likes of what Goebbels orchestrated or some spiel (with no clear purpose) about military history that doesn’t tie into anything at all to do with the show even if he uses the show as a launching point. Strange fellow that Crusader….

I think Brad Swaile makes absolutely no sense as Setsuna. I mean the guys other famous Gundam roles are Amuro and Quatre and those two aren’t exactly gruff like Setsuna. Brad is more suited to softer more extroverted characters, which makes him an awful choice. I think he would have made a better Saji. My ideal cast for the Meisters would have been:

Mark Hildrith as Setsuna F. Seiei
    Cam Clarke as Lockon Stratos
    Crispin Freeman as Allelujah Haptism
    Kirby Morrow as Tieria Erde

Is this going to be like Gundam 00 Destiny? We’ve dome the timeskip, we’ve now gotten new, more powerful factions in the background, we’ve brought the main characters back (except one), and upgraded their Gundams (and I fully expect another upgrade before S2 is done), and things look like they’re going to go to Hell in a hurry for all the people involved.

I -do- like how the first season tried to bring more politics into play… and I do hope we see more of that here, rather than simple technological escalation, as was the case in Gundam SEED Destiny. Yes, there was that “Destiny Plan”, but they seemed to focus more on the technology ramping to sell Mobile Suit models rather than the political maneuverings that Dulindal and company were engaged in to make everything possible, as well as the counter-maneuvers that Lacus and co were supposed to be using. That route would also mean that Saji has more of a role to play this time around, given that he was given a whole angsty background (dead sister, broken marriage, Louise is now distant) to give him a reason to dig into CB and its actions.

@Haesslich: No I don’t think so. Fukuda basically created a fanfiction series when he directed Gundam Seed Destiny and sought to take advantage of the characters and the Freedom Gundam’s popularity so he wouldn’t really have to worry about actually doing his job. Gundam 00 was popular, but not as much as Gundam Seed. I don’t see Mishizuma going down that road. They’ve got a lot more to work with in Gundam 00 Season 2 then Gundam Seed Destiny did. They also have the benefit of open plotlines and in my opinion more interesting and varied characters. There’s so much material at their disposal to take advantage of that I don’t think there’s much chance of them running out ideas like Fukuda and the wife did.

It damned well BETTER not turn out like Destiny, which is pretty much the weakest Gundam plot I can think of… and given how ZZ was, that’s saying something. Even Wing had a decent one in Endless Waltz (I actually liked the movie better than the series). The political plays were something I wanted to see more of, although it looks like that’ll be reduced (or simplified) to some extent by the introduction of the Federation and the Anti-Federation, which cuts down the number of possible alliances/betrayals/counterbetrayals by virtue of removing most of the political bodies. Especially with the faction that armed Corner with his multiple-GN Tricorn Hat last time moving things in the background, I’m starting to get some unpleasant Destiny vibes which I hope will vanish over the course of several episodes.

I will be quite upset if the whole Saji stuff gets wasted, given how much time they put into making sure the viewers got a good long look at him and Louise last season, only to cap it off by breaking them up and taking her hands and family away. It’ll be like bringing Shinn Asuka into Destiny, except the latter actually had a starring role for the first third of the series until JesusKira Yamato returned to save the day and take over the plot.

  10. 10 Myssa Rei July 9, 2008 at 4:11 am

Here’s to hoping that we don’t see a repeat of the Destiny fiasco with Gundam 00’s reiteration. So many hanging plot threads from the first season, probably as many new ones that are going to be introduced, and so little space in a 25-episode cour…

  11. 11 Kaioshin Sama July 9, 2008 at 6:55 am

@Myssa Rei: Destiny’s problem is that it had all the time in the world and still couldn’t fill it with anything compelling. Even if Gundam 00 leaves some of it’s questions to the imagination I can’t see how it could be anything but interesting and fun to watch for it’s characters and setting given the stuff they have going. Unless Setsuna suddenly turned into Kira Yamato over the course of the four year gap (which it doesn’t sound like given the description of what’s happened to him) then I can also expect some good character struggles as well.

  12. 12 Solly Rushdale July 11, 2008 at 10:25 am

Okay firstly, Lyle Dylandy, aka Lockon ripoff (sorry, sorry, I’m still bitter about his death, despite the fact that I predicted before the first episode aired) “shouldering inevitable circumstance” hmmm. Sounds like… maybe he was the one originally chosen out of the two, but he refused it? We’ll see.

Allelujah Haptism – new hairstyle to suit his new self. Also, I really don’t think Marie is his sister. Didn’t they begin experimenting on her before she was born? She was bred and he was experimental material. They’ll probably end up together.

Tieria Erde – Congrats on not being dead.

Setsuna – slightllllllyyyyyyy different hairstyle, I’m finally beging to understand why they made you say all that stuff about “distortion”

Also, y’know, I always wondered why they didn’t wear uniforms on the anime (especially when they did in the manga). I guess that’s all changed now.

Oh yeah, one more thing. STILL NO FEMALE GUNDAM MEISTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
